This beautiful Islamic/Hebrew Hamsa pendent is a bronze casting of the original found in Morocco and measures 2 7/8 inches. Driven out of Spain centuries ago, Jewish silversmiths taught the indigenous people of North Africa their skills. This Hamsa combines the benevolent Islamic Hand of Fatima with Hebrew words. Translated, I am told, is the phrase "He is our dust." The Hamsa is a palm-shaped amulet popular throughout the Middle East and North Africa. The Hamsa is often incorporated in jewelry and wall hangings as a superstitious defense against the "evil eye." Hamsa is also referred to as the Hand of Fatima in reference to Fatima, the daughter of the Prophet Mohammed. The word Hamesh means "five" in Hebrew and refers to the digits on the Hamsa hand. An alternative Jewish name for the Hamsa is the Hand of Miriam, in reference to the sister of Moses and Aaron. Ask a question about this product |
